The National History Club is no longer part of The Concord Review, Inc. It is a national organization that was created by Will Fitzhugh in March 2002
to encourage the reading, discussion, writing, and enjoyment of history among secondary students and
their teachers, but it is now independent as The National History Club, Inc., with Niki Lefebvre as President: NLefebvre@nationalhistoryclub.org.
Schools in forty states now have NHC chapters, and there are over
6,200 students involved. They are working to help these clubs at the secondary
level to learn about each other's ideas and activities through our newsletters.
They offer a clearinghouse for information about the activities of our member chapters around the country, sharing ideas and experiences which promote an interest in history, both foreign and domestic, ancient and modern.
There is no fee for a history club chapter to be granted a charter by the National History
Club. The NHC wants any individual with a genuine interest in history to be part of our
organization. They want to encourage students of diverse backgrounds and varying abilities in
schools across the country.
History clubs which join the NHC may be of several different kinds. Some may already be
established, while others may be newly formed. Certain clubs will emphasize local history and site
visits. Some will want to put their time into History Day or History Fair projects of various kinds.
Others may focus on reading history books together and writing long serious history papers. In Spring 2006, the National History Club, in cooperation with George Washington's Mount Vernon, honored one student in each club as the "History Student of the Year." This year's award for each recipient was a copy of David McCullough's book 1776, noting
the student's accomplishment on the inside cover.
They provide members with a newsletter twice a year, sharing information about club activities in
member chapters around the country. We ask that secondary schools applying for a charter send a letter on school stationery to Robert Nasson, Executive Director, with the
the names of all the members and the Advisor, as well as the Advisor's e-mail address, requesting
chapter membership in the National History Club.
